Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network is launching a “major renovation and expansion” of the emergency department at its flagship Allegheny General Hospital.

Five things to know:

1. The $43 million, multiphase, 36,000-square-foot project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, according to a May 13 AHN news release.

2. The new ED will have 57 total treatment rooms, including 48 patient beds and will be designed with open sight lines to maximize care efficiency and patient safety, according to the release.

3. The first of the five phases is expected to be completed in the fall and will focus on improving the initial patient experience with a new waiting area, triage and care initiation rooms, and a comfortable space for patients awaiting test results. It will also include a relocated entrance to the ED, which will be positioned for greater visibility and located near a new centralized security station, the release said. A larger X-ray room will be constructed adjacent to existing CT rooms.

4. The second phase will include relocating and expanding trauma and resuscitation rooms. The six trauma bays will have the capability to be converted into negative pressure rooms as needed for critically ill patients.

5. Work in future phases will add flexible, secure treatment rooms for patients with behavioral health needs, as well as a dedicated corridor providing direct elevator access to the trauma ICU, operating rooms, and radiology suite to streamline patient transport to and from the ED.
